A. STUDENT PERFORMANCE GOALS
5. Increased capability to integrate knowledge from different disciplines to define problems, develop and evaluate alternative solutions, and specify appropriate solutions.

5A. Integration Performance Objective:
"When given a problem whose solution benefits from an application of knowledge from a variety of diverse disciplines the student will recognize the need to exceed the boundaries of his/her principlie expertise and reasonably incorporate the necessary knowledge in arriving at an acceptable solution."
Criteria Method
1. recognize the diverse fields of knowledge that are involved
  • design projects
2. recognize some terminology and areas of concern in other fields involved
3. articulate the relationships of the diverse knowledge field to the problems at hand
4. gain appropraite knowledge through independent or group study
5. use experts as sources of knowledge
6. synthesize multidisciplinary, diverse knowledge into the solution

5B. Problem-solving Performance Objective:
"When presented with a problem, students will recognize, define, and use engineering problem-solving methodology to solve the probelm."
Criteria Method
1. gather data to verify the existence of a problem including data on customer perceptions and desires
  • design projects
2. construct a problem statement and solution criteria
3. generate ideas for possible solutions (e.g., use sketching, brainstorming, and other techniques)
4. select the most appropriate solutions based on solution criteria
5. select and document the solution to be recommended
6. collect feedback for continuous improvement
