summary

TIMEQCC provides the first two years of a rigorous mathematics-education curriculum for future secondary school mathematics teachers. Students then transfer to a four-year institution to complete their degree. This successful program provides students with a unique combination of community college faculty and high school in-service teacher mentoring.

details

The National Science Foundation provided the funding for the development of the secondary school mathematics teacher preparation program at Queensborough Community College entitled TIMEQCC (Teaching Improvement through Mathematics Education at QCC, 2002 – 2005, Dr. Fabricant and Mrs. Peskin, Co-directors). The goal of this NSF grant was to increase the pipeline of future secondary school mathematics teachers by reaching out to non-traditional students (over the age of 25) and foreign-born students, a large demographic of community colleges in New York City.

This program, created specifically to meet the needs of community college students, provides students with faculty mentoring from both college faculty and in-service high school mathematics teachers along with the opportunity and requirement to work in the New York City public schools as tutors and teacher assistants. All TIMEQCC students receive training in PLTL, Peer Led Team Learning. Students are required to complete three terms of calculus, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics. They also take a course in the psychology of teaching mathematics, team-taught by a mathematician and an educational psychologist.

TIMEQCC has partnered with New York University, Queens College of the City University of New York, and a coalition of New York City public high schools to provide students with a wide variety of educational opportunities. New York University and Queens College offer eligible TIMEQCC graduates full scholarships to complete their baccalaureate degrees in mathematics-education. Queensborough Community College (QCC) has applied for and received a Charter from Kappa Delta Pi for a QCC Chapter.
