Online Learning Group
Yesterday, I attended the Online Learning Group (OLG) meeting, held at Scottsdale Community College. The main focus of the meeting was on Reusable Learning Objects.
The first item on the agenda was a demonstration of a program called SoftChalk LessonBuilder. It is a great program that allows a user with basic computer skills to create a variety of learning objects - from pages that can be used to provide textual information in a more interesting and interactive manner to crossword puzzles, matching, word games and quizzes. For more information on SoftChalk and to download a trial of the software, visit: SoftChalk
The next item on the agenda was the E-Learning TravelGuide created by SCC. This site is designed to provide students with information so that they can learn more about online courses at SCC, and decide what type of delivery would be best for them. To view the E-Learning Travel Guide, visit: Travel Guide
Diane Stonebrink, ESL Faculty at EMCC, presented the work that she has been doing with reusable learning objects and WIMBA for her ESL classes. She has used a number of tools to create her learning objects from learning Macromedia Flash to using some simple to learn and use online RLO tools. Some of the tools that she used to create her RLOs are:
Quia Web
Quia (=quintessential instructional archive) Web provides a repository of free RLOs created by instructors using the Quia online generators. To create your own & host it on their server, a $49 yearly membership is required.
Spellmaster
Repository of foreign language RLOs and FREE online generator or downloadable zip file to generate your own RL0s offline and host them on your own server.
Mike Capstick's Quiz Game Master
Create RLOs for free with his online generator or pay $30 for a downloadable program to create a wider variety offline.
I provided a demo of the Maricopa Learning Exchange - the MLX, explained that it is a repository and encouraged faculty to post their learning objects. I also showed a RLO that I created as a tutorial for students in a hybrid class. The RLO that I shared was Areal Weighting with Thiessen Polygons.
Note that students and faculty who have/are participating/teaching hybrid and online classes are needed for the next OLG meeting "What's New in Online Leaning - 'The Student Voice'" Stipends are avaiable for students who participate. If you or your students are interested in participating, please contact Polly Miller at EMCC. To register to attend this event at RSCC, please visit the registration site.
