Great news... our Virtual Learnshop has been approved for 5 hours of FPG. The completely online course will cover what RLOs are, how you can search repositories, how to evaluate whether you've found an RLO you can use and how to develop a lesson around an RLO. The Portal for Online Objects in Learning (POOL) Project
is a consortium of several educational, private and public,
sector organizations to develop an infrastructure for
learning object repositories. We address the
issues of building such architectures including the
metadata, software and hardware considerations and
bootstrapping the system with initial content. We also make
our tools available for download, to help set up similar
infrastructures elsewhere and to connect them to POOL. The
main advantage of our solution is that it can potentially
embrace all nature of individuals and organizations
involved in the learning object economy.
I have found some excellent resources at Splash. It is like a meta search engine of repositories. Additionally, I really like that they are working to address metadata and software/hardware considerations... as this is very important for our students who will use the RLOs and for instructors to consider.
I did a quick search of water quality (my instructional area is Water Resources) and I was provided with 48 RLOs. There were many government documents, etc. that could be used as part of a lesson and there were many international sites. The metadata for the RLOs contains good information including who developed it and what audience it is designed for. There were a lot of good teacher resources, etc but I was disappointed at the number of links to web pages and syllabi.
