News from the League

New and exciting news from the League for Innovation conference in New York City.
I have attended a number of great sessions that I would like to tell you about.

Creating Contexts for Active Learning: A Technology-Enhanced Interdisciplinary Paradigm
This was an interesting presentation using WebCT in a hybrid format to deliver instruction. The presenters discussed methods for using discussion boards, groups, etc to instruct composition classes.

E-Assessment: Innovative Solutions for an Evolving Classroom
Faculty used a unique software package to provide side by side feedback on video/audio feeds. They were able to stop the feed and provide written feedback. They are using this software for assessment of sign language instruction and mentioned applications for speech and communication classes.

Student Success: The Online Companion and Online Student Orientation
Two models for encouraging online students success were shared. Montgomery Community College shared an online companion for students to have a number of resources available to them as well as discussion boards where they could interact with college faculty and personnel. All online students were enrolled and encouraged to participate.

Southeast Community College has a mandatory orientation that is available online and face-to-face. The online orientation includes tutorials and quizzes. Students must print the last quiz and bring it to register in order to be eligible for registration.

Competency-Based Strategies to Effectively Prepare Faculty to Teach Online
The Illinois Online Network (ION) is a consortium of 48 schools in IL that prepares faculty to provide online instruction. They are using the MOODLE CMS to deliver instruction to faculty. During development of the training competencies they used a WIKI to work collaboratively to identify the competencies and develop instruction.

Up Close and Personal: A Bird’s Eye View of Estrella Mountain’s Hybrid Learning Program
Maricopa’s own Estrella Mountain Community College provided information on their strategic approach to developing hybrid courses.

LaGuardia Community College’s ESL Center
We visited LGCC’s ESL Center and learned about a number of their approaches to delivering ESL instruction. They had a number of innovative approaches including creating learning communities of non-credit ESL classes and general studies classes so that students could make progress in a certificate or degree program while learning English skills.

Using Real-World Learning Objects (RWLO) in Science, Mathematics, Language Arts and Educational Technology
This round table discussion focused on the progress being made on the RWLO project – a PT3 grant that Donna and I have been involved with. They are using a tutorial called the Savvy Cyber Professor to encourage faculty to create RWLOs based on course competencies that are unique and compelling.

Flash and Web Design Made Easy
This was a presentation on a fantastic new tool that can be used to make RLOs!!
Mediator 8 Pro is a software program that can be used to “drag-and-drop your way to interactive CDs, Flash ® and HTML websites and pages quicker than with any other multimedia or web design tool.” It allowed for integration of text, images, sounds and videos in an interactive way. The result was the equivalent of a Flash based page that you could use as an RLO in your classes. Check out their website at http://www.matchware.com

Maricopa’s Ocotillo Evolves Again: 18 Years of Faculty-Led Instructional Technology Initiatives
What could be better than seeing a presentation by your colleagues about a project that you are involved with? Alan and John did a great job discussing the history and future of the Ocotillo project.

A Myriad of Perspectives: Collaboration and Consolidation of Blackboard Resources at MCCCD
A group of Maricopa faculty and administrators discussed the Blackboard Alliance project which is a collaborative project that 6 colleges embarked on to share hardware, software, human resources and training resources to purchase and implement the Blackboard enterprise version.

Applying Learning Objects in the Classroom and Online
Sinclair Community College has developed a rubric for assessing content specific RLOs found in repositories. This rubric is based on M. David Merrill’s “5 Star Instruction” model.

Humanize Your Online Courses with Horizon Wimba!
Horizon Wimba demonstrated the features of this Blackboard Building Block that allows verbal communication through announcements, email and synchronous chat.
