Developing Cost-Effective Sharable Content Objects
--from the Brevard Community College
League for Innovation Learnshop: "Developing Cost-Effective Sharable Content Objects."
Brevard Community College has decided that it is more cost effective to create their own "reusable shareable learning objects" than to purchase them. They are doing this through the use of a standard template for object development. They have faculty submit a "Learning Object Proposal." The team (instructional design, faculty, etc) then creates the Sharable Content Object. They shared with us the importance of having the faculty and the team "storyboard" first! They shared several examples of storyboards.
They Tools that they reviewed are:

Donna's Comments:
"Here are some things that we, at Paradise Valley, are thinking about - it's good to look at software that is cross-platform. Software cost (individual copies AND site licenses) and costs and development time for faculty training are other considerations. We have faculty who do want to develop and design their own RLOs. The Macromedia products are very "rich" and great for interactivity but the costs are high and the faculty learning curve can be long. I am using the Tech Smith products and like those for ease of use and compression. Pachyderm is a very exciting environment and am looking forward to working with the 2.0 beta. A product that we're will be using for our "Creating Your Own Learning Objects" on April 2nd at South Mountain Community College is "SoftChalk"

Donna's Comments:
"Be careful because some of these are commercial sites. If you'd like a matrix of RLO Repositories, the one that I go to is at the University of Texas at San Antonio. This site is maintained by Patricia McGee (an Assistant Professor of Instructional Technology in the College of Education and Human Development). I also like OAIster - it is a project of the University of Michigan Digital Library Production Service. Their goal is to create a collection of freely available, previously difficult-to-access, academically-oriented digital resources that are easily searchable by anyone.
