What We Did On Our Summer Vacation

Donna and I have been busy this summer. We attended the NMC - New Media Consortium conference, held 2 Ocotillo RLO learnshops, scheduled a number of events for the fall and spring semesters and were involved in the Savvy Cyber Professor, Real-World Learning Objects (RWLO) project.

Read on for more information on what we've done and plan to do...

The NMC Conference
Donna and I had the pleasure of attending the NMC conference in Honolulu. The conference was fantastic - for details on the conference visit the conference website. Here you will find information on next summer's conference as wll as the archives of the conference this past June and other archived conferences. It was incredible to see what other schools are doing with technology and to see what is in store for us with Pachyderm.

Summer Learnshops
We held two Learnshops this summer.

Our first, Creating Your Own Learning Objects With SoftChalk, was held in June. Participants in the Learnshop learned about Reusable Learning Objects (RLOs) and how to create them using a program called Lessonbuilder by SoftChalk. It allows users to create content, drills, practice and quizzes easily.

Our second, Creating Your Own Learning Objects With Mediator 8, was held in August. Participants in the Learnshop also learned about Reusable Learning Objects (RLOs) and how to create them using a program called Mediator 8. It allows users to create RLOs with the properties of Flash in a very user friendly way.

Fall SchedulingWe have a number of events planned for the fall including more Learnshops to create RLOs using Mediator 8 and Softchalk LessonBuilder. We also will be posting an RLO and RLO Repository twice a month to show you what is being done out there.

Spring SchedulingWe plan to spend most of the spring semester bringing you Pachyderm. A program that allows you to create interactive RLOs as you may have seen at the Ocotillo retreat.

Savvy Cyber Professor (SCP)
We have gotten involved in the (SCP) Project as an off-shoot of our workwith Ocotillo. The SCP is a 8-seesion professional development series that familiarizes community college faculty with unique and compelling applications of the Internet. Faculty create RWLOs - Real World Learning Objects as a result of their participation in the workshop. We plan to have another cohort of Maricopa Faculty start in the Spring semester. To be placed on the waiting list, contact Ray Ostos, Director of Community Partnership Programs, National Center for Teacher Education at the Maricopa Community Colleges - Academic Affairs Division at ray.ostos@domail.maricopa.edu

So, we've been pretty busy and had a fun summer vacation!!
