Repository of the Month: December

December's repository of the month is the Sofia Project.

The Sofia project is an open content initiative launched by the Foothill - De Anza Community College District with funding support from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Under the leadership of Foothill College, Sofia promotes faculty and institutional sharing of online content.

Modeled after MIT’s OpenCourseWare Initiative, Sofia encourages the free exchange of community college-level materials on the World Wide Web. It is our hope that Sofia will lead to the exploration of ways of supporting instruction and student learning using web-based resources.

Currently there are 8 courses created:
-Creative Typography
-Elementary Statistics
-Physical Geography
-Enterprise Network Security
-Introduction to Java Programming
-Introduction to Macromedia Flash
-Musicianship II
-Webpage Authoring

I checked out the Physical Geography course. It is set up like a conventional learning management system and states, "Sofia is not a credit or certificate/degree granting program. This content is freely available as an educational resource for faculty, students, and self-learners. No instructor or moderator is present. This course may be taken for credit online from Foothill College. Please treat this learning space with respect. It is a global classroom."

The lessons were easy to understand. I found the Physical Geography very text-laden and was a bit disappointed that the lessons did not use a variety of learning objects to convey the topics to reach the different learning styles.

I then, took a look at the Creative Typography and Introduction to Macromedia Flash and found them to be much more interactive and teach to different learning styles.

I think that the project is an excellent idea and creating global open courses is something that we should all consider.
