Increasing Engagement for Online and Face-to-Face Learners Through Online Discussion Practice

Today, I attended a very interesting dialogue day, sponsored by the MCLI, here at the District. The presentation was on Increasing Engagement for Online and Face-to-Face Learners Through Online Discussion Practice, presented by Alice Bedard-Voorhees.

Dr. Bedard-Voorhees presented on the research that she did while being a Cross Fellow. The presentation was approximately an hour long, yet very rich in content. She discussed the two groups of students that we serve - Digital Natives (<30 years old) and Digital Immigrants (>30 years old) and the characteristics of these groups. So often in presentations, we hear about how the generations differ, this presentation not only discussed the differences, but also the similarities. Dr. Bedard-Voorhees presentation was rich in the examples that she used and the way that she was able to weave her pedagogical beliefs and practices into her presentation.

During the second hour, she broke us up into groups that discussed specific into ways that students can be engaged in online discussion as she referenced the work of her Cross Paper, Number 8.

The thing that I liked best about the presentation was that it will not be ending... each participant was provided with a copy of her Cross Paper and the MCLI group will be furthering the discussions that took place in the dialogue day via an online discussion (Brilliant!)

As soon as I have information on where the digital audio recording of the presentation and the discussion boards will be posted, I will let you all know!
