Greetings from the League for Innovation – Part 1
Greetings from the League for Innovation – Part 1
Today was the first day of the League for Innovation conference in Atlanta, Georgia.
I attended a session titled, Designing Learning Objects for the iPod and More by TechSmith, the makers of Camtasia ad SnagIt.
I also attended the keynote presentation, by Dr. Belle Wheelan, the executive director of the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges.
The session on Designing Learning Objects for the iPod and More can be found on the TechSmith website at: http://training.techsmith.com/file.php/1/innovations2006/Designing_Learning_Objects_for_the_iPod_and_More.ppt
The session was very interesting. The first thing that they explained was that a person does not have to own or use an iPod to view a Podcast. This is something that is a common misconception. I had this happen just last week. A parent who was interested in home schooling their children needed some resources, so I sent them to a science podcast. Their response was that they didn’t have an iPod. I had to explain that one is not needed.
They discussed a number of ways that poscasts can be used in education, including:
• Recording a lecture/archiving
• Supplemental materials
• Orientation
• Tutorials
• Feedback
• Just in time training for individuals and/or groups
One of the most useful things that they provided was tips for recording PowerPoints, Screen Recording and Producing your projects. Check out the presentation to see some of the pointers that they provided.
On their website, you can find some technical briefs on the video compression codeks H.264 and MPEG-4. http://training.techsmith.com/
Dr. Wheelan delivered another wonderful presentation. Today's presentation provided recommendations for community college leaders. She had wonderful things to say. Most notable was her lessons on how to treat people. I truly believe that every person in the organization is special and adds value to the organization and she reiterated the importance of this. Her presentation will be available on iStream soon.
I’ll be providing more session summaries tomorrow.
